Background Children and Poor Community Development Organization

(CPCDO) branch is located in Battambang (BTT), Cambodia

which received funding support from the Float Foundation since January 2007.

 

The funds from the Float Foundation were used to construct three buildings to 50 orphans (26 boys and 24 girls), four toilets, and a small roon for a generator. One of the three buildings is used for a study room/dining area. In addition, the office is also located in this building. The fund was also used to construct an outdoor kitchen which connected to the girl's building.

The Center started its full operation as of April 20, 2007.

This reporting period is the first quarter ot the 4th year project which is funded by the Float Foundation.

 

CPCDO PersonnelThere are 7 staffs working for the BTT-CPCDO branch in the following structure: Shelter DirectorAccountant/ teacherAdministrator/ teacher Teacher,Wet nurse Security Guard, Cook, All staff held a monthly meeting. In each meeting, regular agenda were discussed: managing children, teaching and educating children on moral and rules living in the center, security and order in the center and hygiene foods and health.

Student performance at school:

  • 28 of 50 children are excellence,
  • 11 of 50 are good;
  • 9 of 50 are average; and
  • 2 of 50 are below average

Five children are at grade 9 will take national exam in July to go to high school. All children well behave at school based on their teachers’ observation and evaluation every month.

Program at the Center:Regular schedule is set for children in the center everyday.

6h45-11h00: school (Monday to Wednesday, Friday and Saturday morning)

12h30-16h30: school (Monday to Wednesday, Friday and Saturday morning)

16h30-17h00: national anthem and watering plants

In Addition to class at public school, children are taking supplementary tutoring program from the on-site teachers to help those that need specific assistance. 34 children from grad 6 to 9 were supplemented on mathematic and physical and 16 were supplemented in Khmer literature and mathematic (children from grad 2 to 4). The Center has English session for the CPCDO children and children from community. In total, there are 59 children taking English class at the center, 9 children are from community and 5 of them are girl. ¨ 36 children (3 are from community) taking Let’s Go II ¨ 18 children (3 are from community) taking New Headway Elementary 80% of them are good in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Skills training:During this reporting period, sculpture skills training was suspended due to business of trainer in his rice field and other business. Although drawing class was also suspended due to lack of budget to cover his fee, however, 33 children still practice their draw from time to time. Children improved their cooking skills. Eight children, seven girls and one boy, continue learning how to cook from the Cook at the center. Five of them are good and can cook different dishes.

Meals: Each child received three meals per day, breakfast, lunch and dinner which all eat together. The Center set a monthly menu with a balanced sufficient meal.

Children health and hygiene: All children have helped the staff to clean their buildings and the premise everyday before starting school. During this reporting period, children have proved their progress and improvement in taking care themselves. They are clean and in good health. There is only a boy who is still lazy in taking shower. However, they were still infected with light illness.

During this period, one boy had a serious traffic accident on the way back from school to the shelter. He was in the emergency at the hospital. As per request from his relative and an approval from the PP-CPCDO, after leaving the hospital his relatives took him home to look after him. He was compensated from the car driver, KHR4250000 (about USD 1000) to cover medical care expenses. The money was also given to his relative. CPCDO Battambong staff have regularly visited him.

Children Materials: The Center received 8 bicycles, valley ball, valley ball net, rice etc. (see below for detail) from different group of visitors. The center replaced the old children mats and blankets with new mats and blankets.

Maintenance of Building 6 doors of the buildings, doors of rest-room were fixed. One wall of kitchen was installed to reduce difficulties in cooking during raining season. The wall of the three building and rest-room were repainted and financially supported by a group of visitor from Rust Pathways. Chicken cage was built but was not completed yet.

Vegetable garden and treeDuring this reporting period, staff and children have planted different herbs and fruit tress, banana, mango, jack fruit, orange, papaya, etc. Water melon and melon are now producing fruits.
Library Library is used for children in center and children from community. The library has table and chairs to read their book In total, there are 727 books in the library. Children like reading and research. Most of them know Cambodian geographic and 20 children are able to tell ferry tale.

Children Committee: Children Committee plan to meet in May.

Other event/ Activity:

  • Had contacted Mr. Keamara to make appointment with Mr. Fillip but could not meet him due to his work.
  • Mr. Dustin, Global Student had visited children at the center 7 times and donated a box of instant noodle, soft drink 2 box (24 cans per box), biscuits.
  • Accompany Mr. Dustin to visit families of 44 children.
  • Madam Nolan Vanna visited the Center and donated 24 big bottles of fruit juice, biscuits, bread, water melon, melon, jelly, instant noodle and 50 T-shirts.
  • Global Student Outreach took back the Motobike which was lent to CPCDO last year.
  • Mr. Bona and Mrs. visited children and donate KHR2000 and a pack of instant noodle to each children.

Difficulty:

  • No transportation means to take children to doctor during night time.

Further Plan

  • Children will visit their relatives during Khmer New Year from 9 April to 20 April.
  • Hold Children Committee meeting to discuss on children status and CPDCO funding situation
  • Invite drawer coach to teach children at the center
  • Apply for NGO’s member
  • Have all children birth certificate
  • Continue monitoring and coaching children on hygiene
  • Continue coaching children on how to maintain their health
