Narrative Report January to December 2011
Background
Children and Poor Community Development Organization (CPCDO) branch is
located in Battambang (BTT), Cambodia which received funding support from the
Float Foundation since January 2007.
The funds from the Float Foundation were used to construct
three buildings to house 50 orphans (26 boys and 24 girls), four toilets, and a small room
for generator. One of the three buildings is used for a study room/dining area. In addition, the office
is also located in this building. The fund was also used to construct an outdoor kitchen which connected to the girls' building. The center started its full operation as of April 20th, 2007.
This report is the annual report of the 5th year project which is funded by the Float Foundation.
CPCDO Personnel
There are 5 staffs working for the BTT-CPCDO branch in the following structure:

Staff meeting was regularly held every month. In each meeting, regular agenda were
discussed: managing children, teaching and educating children on moral and rules
living in the center, security and order in the center and hygiene foods and health.
In addition to shelter staff, there were two persons working in the water production,
one as a sale and another one as water producer.
Children Status:
From the beginning of the year, there were 46 children and later on by end of the
year, there were 40 children living in the center, 15 girls from 11 to 17 years old. Six
children (2 of them are girl) were requested by their family/relative to return home.
Among the 40 children, 5 of them have no parents, 14 have only mother, 6 have only
father, 14 have both parents but their parents are very poor and one boy was
abandoned.
The six children who returned home, two of them still continued their school, 3 other
got a job- one working in Thailand, one working in Malaysia and another one working
in restaurant in Battambang downtown- and one more children worked in his village.
Student performance at school:
All children passed final exam going to new grade in
the new academic year. There were nine children taking national exam in July and
they passed the exam with good grade. All children well behave at school based on
their teachers' observation and evaluation every month. Five children studies at junior high school received recognition reward from the school as an outstanding student. For the new academic year 2011-2012, there were 12 children study at high school, 16 studies at junior high school, and 12 at primary school. Program at the Center: As routine, all children got up early morning to do exercise before getting ready for school. In addition to class at public school, children were taking supplementary tutoring program from the on-site teachers to help those that need specific assistance. 20 children from grad 7 to 11 were supplemented on mathematic, physical and chemical. During the school break (summer break from July to September) all children were taking preparation classes to get ready for the new academic. English program was continued for both CPCDO and community children. In total, there were 42 children taking English class at the center, one from the community.
The book "Let’s Go II and III” were completed during the 3rd quarter and children continuing
taking Essential English Book 1, New Headway, Follow Me and Inter Change. Majority of
them were good in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Skills training:
1- Sewing:
During the summer break, children were trained on sewing which sponsored by
Rustic Pathway. Now 8 out of 10 children were able to make simple clothes for
themselves and other children in the center.
2- Sculpture: A boy was taking a lesson and practice on sculpture skills during his free time from the school, but he was still not able to make a good stuff yet due to the busy time schedule at school which did not give him sufficient time to practice. 3- Drawing: Drawing class was resumed since July which has an objective to upgrade the skills of children who has talent in drawing/painting. The children performance would be evaluated after three months. After the evaluation, children would be separated into 2 levels. From the beginning, the class was conducted on both Saturday and Sunday but starting from September the class was only on Sunday due to children school schedule. At the end of November 2011, among 29 children taking draw lesson, ten children (5 of them are girl) were evaluated and had passed the foundation level moving the next level in which they will use water/oil painting for their drawing. The ten children were well coloring their draws and correctly draw according to the drawing standard, human, animal, nature, etc. For the rest of them, although they would not use the water/oil painting but they would continue their lesson. Meals: Each child received three meals per day, breakfast, lunch and dinner which all eat together. The Center set a monthly menu with a balanced sufficient meal. Children health and hygiene: As usual, children were rotated in cleaning up the buildings and surrounded premise. Majority of children are teenager and taking good care of themselves and their younger brother and sister except one boy who is still a bit lazy in taking shower. However, they were still infected with light illness. Over the year, 38 children were sick on different illness such as: typhoid, cold, fever, dengue, skin decease, parasite in stomach, AEC had sponsored an allowance for a nurse to regularly come to the center every week to check children health and he would treat children with light illness. With this regular visit of the nurse it had help CPCDO in improving children health and hygiene. This project was started since the first quarter of the year. Children Materials: Two broken bicycles were sold out and the income from the selling was spent in fixing other broken bicycles. There were 17 broken bicycles. For the new academic year, children did not have yet school materials such note books, pens, school uniforms, etc. The CPCDO management had been seeking other donor/ individual to support the materials for children. Vegetable garden and tree Only hot chilies and banana were planted in which gives them fruit regularly. Library Library was opened for children in center and children from community. The library had table and chairs to read their book which is now inside the administration room. The number of the book remained the same, 801 books in the library. Due to lack of financial support, CPCDO was not able to buy new books for the children. Pure Drinking water Organization 1001 visited the Water Site nine times to monitor and control the production operation at the Center. Water was sold to community at the average of 40 bottles (20l per bottle) per day. Children at the center access to pure and clean water every day. Starting from October, the water project was handed over to CPCDO to operate it in which CPCDO would manage the whole operation and generate income. Other event/ Activity: -the President of the Float Foundation visited the center in March -during the 3rd quarter, had been contacted Mr. Jim Mcmorran, CEO of electronic company, in regard to co-funding with the Float Foundation for 2012. -had been contacted a monk in Battambong downtown and seven organizations including HFCC, World Vision, Donbossko, seeking for supporting for school materials for children sponsored sewing skills training during summer break, - had approached HFCC two times and 5 organizations in downtown Battambong to seek for school kits support for the children -Visitors through Rustic Pathway contributes to the renovation of the road (connecting from national road to the center) and helping children in building fence for vegetable garden - Cambodian living in Canada visited the center and donated some materials to the children -Hosted two volunteers from Holland for three weeks during October. Paula and Geertruida were here to help children and worked with the management to develop program activities for the children -has approached a local miller for part-time work for elder children -has requested to the commune for land concessions to cultivate rice (negative result) - enrolled children for the new academic year -two cows were raised through community sharing (means that cows are taken care by other people and the first baby will be firstly given to cow taker and the 2nd to CPCDO Difficulty: - Children materials were in shortage such as school materials, clothes etc. - No transportation means to meet NGO's for networking ans local authority and take children to hospital. Further Plan -Apply for NGO’s member -Continue monitoring and coaching children on hygiene -Seek fund from other resources for the operation and children going to university
